It Is Literally Our Name

Filters are the cheapest, most ignored part of your HVAC system, and they cause an outsized share of the breakdowns we get called for. A five dollar mistake here regularly turns into a several hundred dollar repair.

MERV Ratings Without the Marketing

MERV 1 to 4 is a furnace-protection screen with almost no air quality benefit. MERV 5 to 8 is the practical residential sweet spot. MERV 9 to 12 captures fine dust and some allergens and works well in properly sized systems, especially 4 and 5 inch media cabinets. MERV 13 and up captures very fine particles but adds real static pressure, so it belongs on systems designed for it, not slapped into a one inch slot on a twenty-year-old furnace.

Why a Thicker Filter Is Better

A 4 or 5 inch media filter has vastly more surface area than a 1 inch filter, so it can deliver high filtration with lower resistance and last six to twelve months instead of one to three. If your return can accept a media cabinet, it is one of the best value upgrades in HVAC.

Change Intervals That Actually Work

One inch fiberglass: every 30 days. One inch pleated: every 60 to 90 days. Four to five inch media: every 6 to 12 months. Cut those intervals in half with pets, smokers, construction dust or a large household. Write the install date on the filter frame in marker.

Installation Details People Get Wrong

The arrow points in the direction of airflow, toward the blower and furnace, away from the return duct. Do not leave gaps around the frame, since air takes the easy path and bypasses the media entirely. Never run the system with no filter, because the blower wheel and evaporator coil load up with dust and both are expensive to clean.

When Filters Are Not Enough

For allergies, odors and humidity, filtration is one leg of a three-legged stool alongside ventilation and source control. Media cabinets, UV lights, humidifiers and dehumidifiers all have a place, and which one helps depends on the actual complaint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a higher MERV hurt my system?
It can, if the system was not designed for the added static pressure. Symptoms include weak airflow, frozen coils and furnace high-limit trips. Match the filter to the equipment.
Washable filters, yes or no?
Generally no for residential HVAC. They filter poorly, and if reinstalled damp they promote microbial growth on the coil.
What filter size do I need?
The nominal size is printed on the frame, for example 20x25x1. Actual dimensions are slightly smaller. We can confirm sizing during any service call or tune-up.
Do you bring filters to appointments?
Yes. We stock 1, 2, 4 and 5 inch filters in common sizes and will install one during service.
