What Short Cycling Actually Is
A healthy furnace runs in cycles of roughly ten to fifteen minutes or longer in cold weather. Short cycling means it fires, runs two to five minutes, shuts off, then repeats. Each start is the hardest moment on the ignitor, inducer and heat exchanger, so short cycling ages equipment fast while raising your gas bill.
Cause 1: Dirty Filter (Most Common)
A restricted filter starves the blower, heat builds inside the cabinet, and the high-limit switch shuts the burners down for safety. The blower keeps running, the cabinet cools, and the burners fire again. Replace the filter first. If short cycling stops, you just fixed it for a few dollars.
Cause 2: Failing Flame Sensor
The flame sensor proves the burner lit. When it is coated in oxide, the control board sees no flame and shuts the gas valve within seconds, then retries. Classic symptom: the burners light, you hear them, and they cut out four to seven seconds later, repeating three times before a hard lockout.
Cause 3: Blocked Flue or Pressure Switch Fault
A blocked exhaust, collapsed flex vent, bird nest or ice-plugged intake trips the pressure switch. This one matters for safety, not just comfort, because a blocked flue can push combustion byproducts back into the house. Treat repeated pressure switch lockouts as urgent.
Cause 4: Cracked or Overheating Heat Exchanger
Chronic overheating from years of restricted airflow cracks heat exchangers. A cracked exchanger can leak carbon monoxide. Any technician who suspects one should test with a combustion analyzer and shut the system down if it fails. If you have symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure such as headaches, nausea or dizziness that improve outdoors, leave the house and call 911 first.
Cause 5: Oversized Furnace or Bad Thermostat Location
An oversized furnace satisfies the thermostat before the house evens out, then repeats. A thermostat in a hallway near a supply register or in direct sunlight does the same thing. Relocating or reconfiguring the thermostat, or adding staging, solves comfort problems that no part replacement will.
What to Do Right Now
Replace the filter, confirm at least 80 percent of your supply registers are open, clear snow and ice from exterior intake and exhaust pipes, and check that the thermostat is not in direct sun. If short cycling continues after that, book furnace repair. If you smell gas, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house first and call your gas utility, then call us.
